Data for Fault gouge dating in the Spanish Pyrenees: Fault ages, propagation sequence, wall-rock provenance, and thermal constraints
Abstract:
Data for Haines, S., & van der Pluijm, B., `Fault gouge dating in the Spanish Pyrenees: Fault ages, propagation sequence, wall-rock provenance, and thermal constraints´ by Haines, S., van der Pluijm, B. For 'Tectonics' (2022). The data consist of sample locations, X-ray diffraction (XRD) data for mineralogy of several size fractions of fault gouge clays, and Ar-Ar geochronology data for a subset of the clay samples. The data are the core of a mineralogy and geochronology study of clay minerals in fault gouge in the SE Pyrenees of Spain, specifically neoformed illite in the clay gouge, which can be related to fault motion. By characterising the clay mineral population in the fault gouge with XRD, and dating the same materials with Argon/Argon geochronology, an age of the clay minerals in the gouge can then be determined. The age of the clay minerals is age at which the fault gouge formed, and thus can be related to the time of slip of the fault while within a certain temperature window (here 50 - 160 C).
