Abstract:
High-precision trace-element data on olivine phenocrysts were measured in two lavas from Tristan-da-Cunha and three lavas from Gough Islands. Multiple olivines were analyzed from each sample – 22 from TDC58, 28 from TCC59, 37 from ALR52G, 25 from ALR12G and 23 from ALR10G. Tristan-da-Cunha and Gough islands represent the most recent activity of the major 130 Ma-long-lived enriched-mantle-1(EMI)-type Tristan-Gough plume system with a root at the core-mantle boundary related to the African large low shear wave velocity province (LLSVP). Olivine analyses allow to constrain the source mineralogy of the lavas distinguishing pyroxenite versus peridotite. With pyroxenite probably representing recycled oceanic crust and peridotite representing normal mantle these data allow to narrow down the possible precursor material of this plume with geodynamic implications.
