Subalpine Sihl River Time-Series: Short-Chain n-Fatty Acid (C16–C18) Concentrations
Abstract:
This dataset contains biweekly measurements of short-chain plant-derived n-fatty acids (C16 and C18) in surface waters of the subalpine Sihl River, located near Zurich, Switzerland. Sampling was conducted over a multi-year period, with water filtered through 0.7 µm borosilicate filters. Fatty acids were extracted using a microwave-assisted method, saponified, purified on silica columns, and quantified using gas chromatography (GC). The dataset reports concentrations normalized by dry weight (µg g–1 dry weight-normalized), organic carbon content (mg g–1 organic carbon-normalized), and water volume (µg L–1). These measurements provide constraints on temporal variability in short-chain fatty acid dynamics and their role in aquatic organic matter cycling in a subalpine river system.
